10-year-old Sham and her family were forced to flee their home in Syria to escape the war. Once they reached Libya they paid smugglers to sail them to Europe. Their journey across the Mediterranean was horrific. The boat sank and they were abandoned by the smugglers. The family were rescued and reunited except for their son who didn’t survive the journey.
At least 849 people died crossing the Mediterranean to Italy in the first four months of 2017 and we estimate that more than 150 were children.. The true number of child casualties is almost certainly higher given that many children on the move are unaccompanied, so their deaths often go unreported. No one should be forced to risk their life in search of safety or a better future. It’s on all of us to stand with children uprooted. Act now:
