Hello Everyone,
I'm Ron Desi and the topic I'm going to discuss in this video today is schizophrenia, a severe brain disorder wherein people interpret reality abnormally. Worldwide about 1% of population is diagnosed with schizophrenia and about 1.2% of Americans have the disorder which accounts for 3.2 million people.
Although the exact cause of schizophrenia is still unknown, experts assume it could be a combination of genetics and environmental factors. The disorder involves different cognitive, behavioral, or emotional problems and is usually indicated by the following symptoms:
Delusions or false beliefs not based in reality
Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that don't exist)
Disorganized thinking or speech
Extremely disorganized or abnormal motor behavior
Lack of ability to function normally
Social withdrawal
Flat, expressionless gaze
Hostility or suspiciousness
Inability to cry/express joy
Oversleeping/insomnia
Extreme reaction to criticism
Schizophrenia symptoms start in the early to mid-20s in men, late 20s in women and treatment options include:
Medications, usually antipsychotic medications
Psychotherapy e.g. individual or family therapy, social skills training, vocational rehabilitation and supported employment
