United Nations - Brigadier General Georges-Pierre Monchotte, serving as Police Commissioner of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) talks about how the United Nations Police assisted the Haitian National Police to provide security during the humanitarian crisis caused by Hurricane Matthew, as well as the core policing mandate of MINUSTAH. The police component in the mission supports the development and the capacity-building of the Haitian National Police (HNP), contribute to the maintenance of security and law and order in the country, provides election security jointly with the HNP and assistance in ensuring the rule of law, based on the mandate.
United Nations Police is deployed in 12 peacekeeping operations, as well as 6 Special Political Missions to help restore confidence in host-State police and rule of law structures and serving to protect civilians, providing electoral and border security and management, limiting the effects of transnational organised crime, investigating and preventing cases of sexual and gender-based violence.
