The International Criminal Court (ICC) today (15 Jan) announced the acquittal of former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo as well as ex-militia leader Charles Blé Goudé of all charges against them.
The two had faced charges of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in the context of post-electoral violence in the country between 16 December 2010 and 12 April 2011.
The Court ordered the release of Mr. Gbagbo and Mr. Blé Goudé. The Prosecutor may request that either or both remain in detention for exceptional reasons.
Judge Cuno Tarfusser said the Prosecutor has failed to submit sufficient evidence to demonstrate the responsibility of Gbagbo and Blé Goudé for the incidents in question.
Judge Herrera Carbuccia issued a dissenting opinion. The Prosecutor may appeal.
