In this video, Mahalo expert Sean Hewitt explains how and why to use the Problem Step Recorder in Windows 7.
Using the Problem Steps Recorder
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Problem Step Recorder is an excellent troubleshooting tool that will allow you to show someone a problem you have and exactly how you arrived at it.
1. To access the Problem Step Recorder, go to the
Start Menu.
2. Type in "problem steps."
3. Press Enter.
4. With the Problem Steps Recorder open, click the arrow tab on the right and make sure to select Run as administrator if you're an
administrator (which you should be if you own the computer).
5. Click Yes. You will now be allowed to see all your windows on one screen.
6. Click the Start Record button.
The Problem Step Recorder can come in handy if you're having trouble opening a specific image. In order to share these issues with someone who can assist you with troubleshooting, you can record the exact process and error message. To do so you would do the following:
* Right-click on the image.
* Open with Adobe Reader.
Adobe Reader, in this example, displays an error message indicated that it can't read this file, which is the problem you're tracking. Now you will hit Stop Record. You'll be prompted to save the file. Enter the file name and save it accordingly.
To view your file, double-click on it, then double-click the file itself inside the dialogue box and it will open up inside
Internet Explorer.
You will now see both the monitors you have open as well as the areas you clicked on with the concluding error message. Additionally, you'll see text that explains each action you performed that led you to the error message.
You can now send this file to someone else and illustrate exactly how you came to your error message.
