Data Guard is fantastic technology. We can configure physical standby databases for zero data loss and minimal downtime under any circumstances. Then there are the performance enhancements: logical standby, realtime query standby, snapshot standby. Release 12c takes it further, with full support for cascading standby with the Far Sync capability. It can all get awfully complicated.
