The context of the recent September 11 commemoration, the opening of the WTC Memorial, as well as memorials in other US cities, asks for analytical and critical reflection, and design imagination regarding the past, the present and the future of memorials.Continuing discussion on new memorials, "counter-monuments," and "temporary memorials," demands renewed historical, theoretical, design and artistic discussion on the aim, function, form, commemorative program, methodology and techniques of memorial.

Can we design memorials that provide democratic conditions for memory discourse and inspiring programs for proactive engagement in building a better future on which next generations would have less tragic events to commemorate and less memorials to build?

The event will include presentations by Mark Jarzombek, Erika Naginski, and Kirk Savage, as well as a discussion moderated by Krzysztof Wodiczko.
