It’s a delicate balance in a string quartet to find the right blend of personalities and the creative drive and direction necessary to stay at the highest level. For the Ying Quartet, that balance has been a part of their story from the beginning.

It began with four siblings: David, Janet, Phillip and Timothy. From their time as students at the Eastman School of music in the early 1990s, to later becoming the quartet in residence there after establishing their presence in the classical music world, they’ve maintained that level for more than 20 years now. Despite changes that included Timothy leaving the group and the addition of violinist Ayano Ninomiya in 2010, their passion for the music has not wavered.

After five years with the group, Ayano announced that she would be moving on from the group in 2015. Once again, the three remaining siblings were left with the decision of how to move forward.

This transition presented a rare opportunity to step inside the audition room as the Yings selected the quartet’s newest member. Get an inside look at the audition process and meet the next violinist of the Ying Quartet as they write the next chapter of their story.
