United Nations - The role of the United Nations in Cyprus is indispensable, now and in the future, according to the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide. In a recent interview with the UN News Centre, the Special Adviser said this is the message he has been consistently receiving from the Cypriots since he assumed his current role in August 2014. In the interview, he spoke about the "remarkable progress" that has been made between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in their quest for a unified country - commended by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his meeting with Cypriot leaders on 25 September 2016 - as well as the challenges and the contribution of the UN in Cyprus. He also emphasized the fact that the Cypriots want and need the UN to be the facilitator in their intensive negotiations as they seek to chart a course for the future of the Eastern Mediterranean island.
