McDermott has edited The Writings of William James: A Comprehensive Edition (Random House, 1967), The Writings of Josiah Royce (University of Chicago, 1969; Fordham, 2005), The Philosophy of John Dewey (Putnam, 1973); was general editor of The Correspondence of William James (University of Virginia, 1992-2004); and, in addition, has published on a wide range of subjects. McDermott has served as president of the Royce Society, the William James Society, and the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. He is University Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Texas A&M.
