I'm Bob Francis and today I'm going to debunk 6 common myths about mental illness.
Let's start:
1. Mental illnesses aren't common
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 out of 5 people in the US will suffer from diagnosable mental disorder in their lifetime
2. Mental illnesses are genetic
Although heredity is one of risk factors for mental illness, bad genes aren't the only culprit. Multiple factors play a role
3. People don't recover from mental illnesses, they are for life
People can and do recover from mental illness due to various treatments, support groups, services etc.
4. Mental illnesses only affect adults
Kids can be affected as well. In fact, many mental health problems first appear when person is young but are usually overlooked
5. Having suicidal thoughts means I'm crazy
Suicidal thoughts are associated with depression and it doesn't mean you're crazy. These thoughts vanish once you start treating mental illness
6. People with mental illness can't work
Workplaces are filled with people who experienced or are still battling with mental illness. To some people, work can be therapeutic.
