United Nations - The World Health Organization, WHO, confirms that the Zika virus, transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, damages the nervous system of both adults and unborn children. The virus can cause birth defects, including a congenital malformation called microcephaly. In Brazil alone more than 90,000 people have been infected and more than 2,000 cases of microcephaly have been registered. Scientists are racing to develop a vaccine, with clinical trials scheduled for later this year.
