In February, the Eastman School of Music's Treble Chorus partnered with Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle and Professor Julius Dicks to perform a unique concert featuring both classical and gospel music. Combining these genres is rare, largely due to the historical view that gospel music would damage a classical singer's voice. In Dr Battle's dissertation, "'I Sing Because I‘m Free': Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer," she explored creating a healthy vocal technique versatile enough to allow musicians to safely work with both gospel and other vocal styles.
