Press Briefing by Mr. Ma Zhaoxu, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of November.
Asked about DPRK sanctions, Chinese ambassador Zhaoxu Ma today said “given the positive developments” on the Korean Peninsula, some Security Council members including China “believe that it is necessary” for the Council to “consider invoking the reversible provisions at an appropriate time.”
As his country holds the presidency of the Security Council for the month of November, Ambassador Ma today briefed reporters in New York on the Council’s programme of work for the month.
On peace and security in Africa, Ma said - in his national capacity - that “China is committed to the maintenance of international security and peace in Africa. We will do whatever we can to help African countries and AU to promote peace and security in this continent.”
Reiterating the role of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and security, the President of the Council said “in light of the new problems and the new challenges we are facing, we believe it is important that the United Nations Member States jointly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.”
He added, “We need to find ways and means to strengthen multilateralism, and the role of United Nations, to consolidate the collective security mechanism and increase cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations.”
