For their senior capstone project, audio and music engineering majors Timothy Dick, Matthew Dylewski and Frank White, designed an immersive multi-channel speaker array, with 29 channels.
The 27 speakers and two subwoofers are mounted all around the small room, allowing for a person sitting in the center to truly be surrounded on all sides by the sound coming through it. That sound can range from recorded music to sound experiments programmed to travel from one area to another, or controlled by a joystick to direct the sound wherever it is desired.
The application for this setup ranges from music recording and performance use, to audio research to creating a more immersive VR experience for gaming enthusiasts.
