In celebration of Phil Wilson Day, the Garden of Joy performs Billy Mayhew’s It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie with the legendary musician’s video debut on piano. Phil Wilson is a virtuoso trombonist who taught for half a century at Berklee College of Music, founding the Rainbow Big Band, ultimately receiving an honorary doctorate, and having the City of Boston declare December 9th, 1995 as Phil Wilson Day.

Over the course of his illustrious career, he performed with Louis Armstrong on the ‘64 Grammy Awards show, worked with Woody Herman’s famed ‘60s Swinging Herb band, arranged for Buddy Rich, and received a Grammy nomination for his Mercy, Mercy, Mercy chart.

His latest release, From the Vault, Vol. 1., is a retrospective of Phil’s musical life, and includes many previously unreleased charts. The album features jazz luminaries including Greg Gisbert, Cyrus Chestnut, Red Mitchell, Rich Matteson, Jack Peterson, Gary Burton, Yasushi Nakamura, Makoto Ozone, Terri Lyne Carrington, George Garzone, John Lockwood, and many more.
