Travel video about destination Hachpat in Armenia.
In the north of Armenia is Hachpat, with its monastery that was founded in 976 A.D. In the Middle Ages, the monastery was a large centre of culture in which notables of that time worked. Connected to the main premises is Grigor Church which dates from the early eleventh century with a modest exterior that features a cross that has four corner rooms. The Hamazasp building is the largest of the monastery complex, a square-columned hall with a large light that looks like a Gavith and which most probably served worldly purposes. Abbot Hamazasp had it built it on the site of a former crypt of Kjuikjan. Still within the monastery walls, the Ukhanat Mausoleum has been well preserved, an indication of the close ties that existed between Church and State. The freestanding bell tower was built at the highest point. Two chapels, one on top of the other, are crowned by a slender bell tower. Outside the protective walls is a source-house with a hidden holy spring that was worshipped by the people. The people believed that for as long as the spring water flowed, they would live a happy, healthy and peaceful life.
