Kids today have mobile devices and games at their fingertips. What does this mean for learning and how does this digitized environment change the culture in schools? Watch as Professor Garcia explores these ideas and shares research around collaboration, learning, and player agency.
Antero Garcia, assistant professor at the Graduate School of Education
Professor Garcia’s two most recent research studies explore learning and literacies in tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons and how participatory culture shifts classroom relationships and instruction. Based on his research, he co-designed the Critical Design and Gaming School--a public high school in South Central Los Angeles. His most recent book, Good Reception: Teens, Teachers, and Mobile Media in a Los Angeles High School takes an ethnographic look at technology and gaming. Past books explore critical research methodologies, techniques for shifting English language arts pedagogy, and changes in the consumption of young adult literature.
This talk was recorded at Stanford Reunion Homecoming 2018.
