I'm going to show you some really cool techniques for beginning crochet, and hopefully, you'll have as much fun as I have with it. Okay, lets get started. So when you're choosing a stitch, you want to keep in mind the height of that stitch. Again, crochet stitches are at different heights. You have a very short stitch, like the single crochet or the half-double crochet, you have taller stitches, like the double crochet. And each one is going to create a different fabric as well. The shorter the stitch, the smaller it is, the tighter the holes, the together the fabric. The longer the stitch, the more open the fabric. So besides the fabric that the stitch creates, you can create different textures as well by just combining those stitches. For example, in this hat, we've combined the single crotchet with the half-double to create sort of a wave affect. In a shell stitch, you're putting a bunch of those tall double crochet stitches next to each other, like to make a fan here. And they're nice and tall so it makes an open, lacy look. In this afghan here, these are motifs that build height from the center out using tall stitches and short stitches to create different effect. So, besides being at different heights, combining the stitches in different ways can be used to create really unique textures. If you're interested in checking out some different stitch combination, you can go to lionbrand.com, under the learning center, and there's a tab called stitch finder, and there's a huge selection of really interesting stitches to try out at home.
