What are you afraid of? Are you worried you’ll never reach your professional goals? Are you scared that you’ll never find the perfect romantic partner? Are you living a fear-based life because you feel unable to do anything else? You’re not alone. Every single person on the planet is afraid of something. However, there are ways you can learn how to overcome fear.

Fear prevents you from reaching your true potential. When in fact, you should be using fear motivation to reach your goals. You have to decide that nothing is more important to you than reaching your goal – whether that goal is related to your career, finances, health or relationships isn’t important. You need to commit 100% to reaching your objective. Once you do so, no amount of fear or self-doubt can possibly hold you back.

Everyone experiences fear in their lives, but only the most successful people learn how to overcome fear by using it as motivation. Here are five ways to stop overcoming fear and start living your most joyful, successful life.

1. Determine if your goal is a “should” or a “must”

Just how important is this goal to you, really? If you’re tired of living a fear-based life, try this simple exercise. Imagine yourself as an older person, perhaps in your 80s or 90s. As you’re sitting in your comfortable home, you think back on your life – what do you wish you’d done differently? If the answer is that you wish you had gone after your goal, instead of letting fear dictate your happiness, then you know that this objective is a must for you.

2. Recognize your excuses

Many times, we make excuses as to why we’re not doing what we should. You say you don’t have enough time to work toward your dream, or that you don’t have the resources you need to make progress. Recognize these instances for what they are – excuses, not facts. The most successful people in the world have the same amount of time in a day as you do, but they’re using it to their advantage. The next time you feel yourself making an excuse, cut off the thought pattern in its tracks.

3. Adopt a growth mindset

A large part of overcoming fear is learning to identify how you deal with challenges. When you’re pursuing a goal and an obstacle comes up, how do you handle it? Do you throw in the towel because it seems too difficult to proceed? Instead of giving in to challenges, or saying you don’t have what it takes, adopt a growth mindset. Learn to start thinking of issues as learning exercises instead of beating yourself up over them. This is a more productive approach that will allow you to achieve long-term success.

4. Gain insight from pain

Are you afraid of going after your goals because you’re afraid of pain? Every person on the planet has experienced painful experiences. You’re going to come up against things that make you uncomfortable, but if your goal is a must, you have to proceed nonetheless. Don’t let the fear of pain tell you something is impossible.

5. Know that failure is inevitable

One of the most common fears is the fear of failure. Many people are so afraid of failing that they never try at all. Ask yourself, what’s more frightening: failure, or never even having the guts to try? Every successful person in the world has failed at least once in their lives. Don’t let yourself get swept up into a fear-based life simply because you’re afraid you won’t succeed.
