Dr. Stuart Armstrong, of the Future of Humanity Institute of Oxford University, was invited to Preston by John Lunt and Jo Guiver to give a talk at UCLAN and the U3A, on the future and on the challenges his institute faces in trying to increase the chance of humanity's survival and flourishing over the long scale.
The talk touches upon the importance of focusing on the most impactful issues, the difficulties in predictions (especially about novel technologies), the biases that affect experts and laypeople alike, the existential risks that threaten human survival, and the great positive possibilities that the future could have in store.
