Kurt Waldheim of Austria served as Secretary-General of the United Nations for ten years, succeeding U Thant in 1972, and re-appointed to a second term starting in 1977. His tenure was marked by a range of developments in the global arena, ranging from inter-communal tensions and violence in the Middle East and massive displacement in Bangladesh to conflicts in Afghanistan, as well as between Iran and Iraq.
