Congresswoman Louise Slaughter represented our area for more than 30 years, working tirelessly to support research, health care, and the humanities at the University of Rochester.

Here are a few highlights from her long history of support for the University:

In 2009, Slaughter delivered the commencement address and was awarded the George Eastman Medal for outstanding achievement and dedicated service.

In 2013, the Science Coalition presented her with the Champion of Science Award in a ceremony at the University of Rochester’s School of Nursing.

In 2015, she was instrumental in securing an investment of more than $600 million in federal, state, and private funding for a photonics manufacturing center to be based in Rochester.

A fierce advocate for women’s rights, the congresswoman joined hundreds of voters who placed stickers on Susan B. Anthony’s grave on Election Day.

In February 2018, she joined state, local, and University leaders at the opening of the NextCorps technology incubator in downtown Rochester.

Having received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, Congresswoman Slaughter brought that perspective to her work in government, understanding the importance of funding scientific research.

Her impact on the University of Rochester and the entire region will be felt for generations to come.
