Pronunciation Mistakes by Native Speakers

Do native speakers make pronunciation mistakes? Yes!
We do, including yours truly. Sometimes, words have more than one acceptable pronunciation, especially in terms of word stress, and we're simply not aware of those variations. This can cause confusion and surprise. Other times, we read a word but aren't familiar with the pronunciation. If it's not a high frequency word (i.e., not often used), we might not bother to look it up and check the pronunciation. (Though that's a good practice to follow.) Then when we actually say the word aloud, we fail to say it accurately enough to be understood. Only if someone corrects us do we realize we've been saying it wrong either in our head or aloud. We should all be open to learning and improving.

This topic has sparked some debate over what is and isn't correct. Should we even use the word "correct" in reference to pronunciation? More often these days, we use the word "non-standard" instead of "incorrect." Nevertheless, using a non-standard stress pattern can be perceived as incorrect by listeners. My main objective was to call attention to the fact that even native speakers have pronunciation doubts and sometimes unknowingly deviate from the norm. Is it a "mistake" or a "variation?" When in doubt, you can check a few different sources and develop a sense of what is standard, for example, in American English.
