Ten years ago television screens across the world flashed harrowing images of the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami which hit the coasts of Asia-Pacific. Today a new video released by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) looks at work done to fill the gaps in disaster prevention, risk reduction and warning systems which contributed to the huge loss of life that day.
The five-minute video, produced by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union with support from ESCAP, examines the ESCAP Trust Fund for Tsunami, Disaster and Climate Preparedness and the steps taken to build an effective regional disaster preparedness mechanism. Broadcasters are invited to show the piece either in whole or in part.
Featuring:
Ms. Shamika N. Sirimanne, Director, Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division, ESCAP
Mr. Atiq Kainan Ahmed, Programme Specialist, Climate Change and Climate Risk Management, Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre
Dr. Charles McCreery, Director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre
Dr. Srinivasa Kumar, Head, Advisory Service & Satellite Oceanography Group, Indian National Tsunami Warning Centre
