Press briefing by H.E. Mr. Olof Skoog, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations, on Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Swedish Ambassador Olof Skoog today said that the members of the Security Council are “very committed” and “stand firmly behind the sanctions on the DPRK in accordance with the Council’s resolutions,” adding that it is “absolutely key” that all Members implement sanctions “faithfully and in a rigid and rigorous way.”
Speaking to reporters today (21 Nov) in New York after the Security Council held a discussion on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Swedish Ambassador Olof Skoog said “we believe that the Council has shown strong resolve and unity on the DPRK issue and that has contributed to the momentum that we have seen over the last year.”
Saying that the humanitarian situation in the country is dire, Skoog said “there is no question that the main responsibility for that situation rests with the Government of North Korea, but that does not take away the responsibility in North Korea, as in any other country, for the international community to so its best, its at most to provide lifesaving support for the population.”
The Swedish Ambassador also said the Council is concerned that “the chronic underfunding of humanitarian support is hampering this humanitarian effort.”
He urged all countries to “come in with financial support to OCHA and the agencies that are operating in the DPRK and elsewhere.”
