Atabo (32 years old) and baby Maximilla (1 month old) were rushed to Lodwar county referral hospital after her baby was born prematurely. She is suffering from severe malnutrition and pneumonia. They came from Turkana East sub-county, 150 km from Lodwar. Atabo has 2 more children. Her husband was killed while she was pregnant by cattle rustlers. Her father was also killed. Maximilla had a twin brother (Ekuru) who died from malnutrition and other health complications 5 days after birth.
They had little food and there were points in the pregnancy when she only drank black tea. The babies had diarrhea and without support, their mother struggled to produce breast milk, so the babies were fed with animal milk instead which made them sicker. After continuously visiting their local health centre they were finally taken to Lodwar County referral hospital by ambulance.
