Things Americans should adopt from Europeans (and vice versa)

Europeans and Americans are as different as night and day. What are some things that Americans can adopt from Europeans and vice versa.

(1) MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM
For the vast majority of Americans, living without a car is impractical. Public transportation and mass transit systems are woefully inadequate in most parts of the U.S. Europe, however, has some of the best, most extensive public transportation systems in the world. And there are many advantages to that: less congestion, reduced air pollution, health benefits, a vibrant street scene/sidewalk culture and more productivity in the workplace.

(2) HIGHER EDUCATION
The US is well-known for its high tuition costs (and resulting high student debts upon graduation). In Europe, universities are heavily subsidized by individual governments, higher education costs range from zero to really low for nationals of those countries and from the European Union. The specific price tag varies by country and its social policies. In Finland, for example, the main objective of its social policies is higher education, and it is made available free to all European Union nationals.

(3) CAFETERIAS
One of Europeans' favorite pastimes is sitting in coffee shops reading, writing, or studying with a mug in front of them. There’s a never-ending supply of cafes to try in Prague, Paris, Vienna, etc. and they’re all unique – not chains like Starbucks or Caribou – but little locally-owned places with bookshelves and funky couches. Also, the presentation of coffee in Europe is much more elaborate than in the US – usually it will come out on a tray with a glass of water, a pitcher of milk, and sometimes a little cookie

(4) SPEAKING MULTIPLE LANGUAGES
Due to geography, the US is more insular than Europe. In Europe there is almost always a different language right next door. Europeans believe it's really important to know different languages, and start learning them in school from a young age, while many schools in the U.S don’t even require kids to take foreign language anymore.
Young Europeans usually learn English and another language other than their own.

(5) PARENTAL LEAVE
German employees, for example, are entitled to parental leave until their child turns three years old and can take a place in the state-run kindergarten. Their job will wait for them and even earn two-thirds the salary for the first year, and parents can take leave together or separately.

(6) TAXES
No matter where you travel in the US, you see small shops/stores where you can follow your taxes. You never find something like this in Europe. On average, Americans pay less taxes than Europeans because the system in the US has so many rules that you can use legally to reduce your taxes.
