Agriculture and livestock produces tonnes of waste every day. It’s a problem for farms and for the planet. To solve this, Schwab Foundation awardee Alex Eaton invented the biodigester to help farms cut down on waste and fight climate change.

In this video he discusses how the technology works and the impact it has on farms around the world. Organic waste is fed into biodigester, bacteria then breaks down the material, the only by-product of which is methane gas. That gas is then captured and can be used to produce mechanical or electrical energy. The leftover organic material can then be used as fertilizer.

Small farms grow around 80% of the food that’s consumed in developing economies, but many don’t have access to training and technology.
