The UN Secretary-General-designate, António Guterres, has spoken emphatically about peace, noting it is the best way to reduce human suffering "in all dimensions". Shortly after his formal appointment as the next Secretary-General on 13 October 2016, Mr. Guterres spoke about his priorities upon assuming office on 1 January 2017. Top among them, he said, is the need for "a surge in the diplomacy for peace", in order to strengthen the international community's capacity to prevent and solve conflicts.
