The United Nations Security Council expressed “grave concern” over the recent violence in eastern Ukraine and condemned the “continuous violations of the cease-fire regime.”
In a Presidential statement read by Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia (06 Jun) the Security Council condemned the use of heavy weapons which are “responsible for tragic deaths, including among civilians.” It called for the implementation of disengagement commitments and the immediate withdrawal of heavy weapons in accordance with the Minsk Agreements.
The Security Council recalled its “full support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine” and encouraged all the parties involved to “recommit to the peace process and to implement all the measures agreed in the Normandy format and the Trilateral Contact Group in order to achieve immediate progress in the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.”
The Security Council also reaffirmed “its full support for Resolution 2166 (2014) on the downing of flight MH17.”
Presidential statements are adopted unanimously by the Security Council. The Russian Federation is currently presiding over the Security Council for the month of June.
