Technology is one of the fastest growing industries, with about 4.4 million available jobs by 2024 According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, yet women continue to be severely underrepresented in the tech workforce. Female professionals comprise only about a quarter of all computing occupations and even fewer are employed in more innovative careers, like software development and technology leadership. Stephenie Gloden, VP of Enterprise Resource Management at University of Phoenix, says despite working in a male dominated field, she never considered herself a “woman in tech.” She says in order to bridge the STEM skills gap and encourage women to pursue tech careers, the nation needs to start incorporating tech and STEM education at a younger age and female leaders and trailblazers need to take onus and lead the charge.
