Opening a new restaurant, whether as a franchise or stand alone is never an easy task. In this video we will explain what are the five most important legal steps to take to make your new business endeavour more pleasant and more efficient:

1. Decide about your restaurant name, make proper registrations and remember to register a domain and social media accounts under this name BEFORE you incorporate the business.

2. Decide which business form of operations to chose, I personally suggest to incorporate a business rather than operate as a sole proprietorship. Please see our video with explanations here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KsJZaVE4r8&t=2s and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8OIJDFG3RQ&t=22s

3. Make sure the place that you have chosen allows to operate restaurant – check the “zoning” of the property with the local municipality to make sure the property is zoned to include restaurant operations. Please do that BEFORE you sign a lease agreement.

4. Start LLBO application (serving alcohol) well ahead of time. The process takes 12 – 16 weeks and requires lots of information and compliance requirements. The earlier you start, the better the chances are to obtain the license before you start your operations.

5. Employees or subcontractors – decide how to work and have proper documents in place (please see our two part video here:

Part I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKiKz821vVY&t=1s
Part II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izrQ7fxZQio&t=153s

6. Bonus. Prepare your compliance documents – health and safety, human rights, workplace violence and harassment and more.
