I am doing this video as much for myself as I am for you. If you ever feel chronically stressed and overextended during the holiday season, use my five basic strategies to keep yourself sane during the holiday chaos.

1. Make a plan with your family well in advance. What will the holidays look like. Are you hosting this year? What parties must you attend and what can you say no to. How does this coincide with your spouse’s or children’s schedule? Sit down and map out how much you want to take on this season, whether it’s hosting or traveling or sending out holiday cards. Set aside days to shop, cook and prepare. Make sure you have some help with party prep and clean up. Pace yourself and leave nice sized gaps in between events to allow time to get back to center.

2. Set a budget for this year, including what you’re spending on gifts or hosting expenses, decorating or charitable giving. The holidays can drain families emotionally and financially. Make sure that things are budgeted so there are no surprises, and stick to it. Money doesn’t buy happiness, and it sure isn’t about the meaning of the season. Family time, special games you play or fun ways to make memories are priceless in comparison. If you have a talent, give homemade gifts, or do a family gift exchange to save money so you’re not having to buy for everyone. Whatever gifts you do need to get, shop early so you’re avoiding all of that stressful traffic and parking. Also, a great lesson for children is volunteering to help others. See where you can make an impact in someone else’s life where it doesn’t cost you a thing and can really be impactful and memorable for years to come.

3. Don’t feel like a heel for saying no. There’s only so much you can do and take on. Being overextended and resentful in the end will not make you jolly and nice by Christmas time. You won’t be able to attend every party or function, and you may not want to take on hosting the family this year. Be honest about your feelings and where you are and come up with a solution that suits everyone, but doesn’t have you falling on your sword. You might be surprised by the level of understanding you receive just by being transparent. Also, set a code of conduct for family if there are political differences or issues that repeatedly come up during this time of year, especially when alcohol is involved. Kindly ask people ahead of time to avoid hot button subjects like politics, religion or the crazy family member.

4. Keep your healthy habits. There’s nothing worse than feeling drained after the holidays AND 5-10 pounds heavier! Eat healthy snacks before holiday parties like nuts and veggies to fill you up a bit so you’re not tempted by the sugary and carb-loaded treats. Speaking of treats, treat yourself to plenty of rest. You’ll need the extra zzz’s and restorative sleep at night. Make sure you’re exercising, especially as a stress reliever. Take long walks, get a massage, meditate, go to your place of worship and practice physical, mental and spiritual good health. You can’t be good for anyone if you’re not good to yourself.

5. Stay grateful. It’s easy to get lost in the madness and lose sight of the beauty of the season. Try starting every day by counting your blessings. I bet there’s someone in this world who would give anything for your life at the moment. Someone who may be alone, or unwell, depressed and feeling lost. We have to remember what we have and offer up thanks repeatedly so we don’t lose sight of our relationships, health, work and all the things that enable all of this to take place. God is good, and He deserves a hearty shout of praise.
