In this concert on October 17, 2002, two members from the world-renowned Turkish ensemble Lalezar perform classical Ottoman devotional songs. To provide context and meaning for non-Turkish speaking audience members who wish to discover a deeper understanding of the interconnections between the music and Islam, the program also includes a short presentation of the art form by scholars Virginia Danielson, curator of the Archive of World Music in the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library; Ali Asani, Professor of the Practice of Indo-Muslim Languages and Culture; and Cemal Kafadar, Vehbi Koç Professor of Turkish Studies. The concert, "Concert of Turkish Muslim Devotional Music: A Program on the History, Theory, and Performance of Turkish Music," was presented by the Center for the Study of World Religions in partnership with the Music Study Group and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
