Is AI the next Mozart—or just a mashup machine?

Music is a deeply human art form. So, what happens when artificial intelligence enters the orchestra pit or the recording studio? URochester faculty discuss.

From the mythical lyre-strummer Orpheus, whose songs moved even rocks and trees, to the swinging sounds of Count Basie Orchestra, music has always landed among the most soul-stirring, emotionally rich expressions of human creativity. But now artificial intelligence (AI) has entered the chat. Can AI systems powered by machine learning create music that wins our hearts, enthralls our ears, and satisfies our sense of ethics—while lowering the barriers for entry into the profession?

At the University of Rochester, a cross-disciplinary team is building an AI-powered music production ecosystem that supports open collaboration and distribution. The initiative, called TEAMuP, is backed by a $1.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation and encompasses four schools at URochester as well as Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. TEAMuP also aims to fine-tune music education at every level, from youth orchestras to conservatory students.

Computer technology has enhanced and even altered music for decades, from synthesizers to automated mixing to Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) performance. But after significant breakthroughs in the last few years, a simple text prompt entered into an AI system can generate a fully realized piece of music, complete with lyrics and instrumentation. While this opens creative possibilities for DJs seeking a fresh remix, film directors in need of a soundtrack, and content creators singing from their bedrooms, urgent questions are emerging from this uncharted partnership: Can AI make music that sounds “human”? What does this mean for professional musicians? Can we generate good art with AI as a tool? Can AI unleash our creativity? And who “owns” a work that AI generates—the prompter or the program?

In this roundtable, the four principal investigators of TEAMuP discuss questions surrounding AI and music and the future of AI as a “creative co-worker.”
