The “Alpabzug” or “Alpabfahrt” are the Swiss names for bringing the cattle in the alpine pasture down to the farms in the valley where the winter is spent. This usually happens between mid-September and mid-October when there is insufficient food available on mountain pastures. When the summer period has passed the cattle are often exuberantly decorated with flowers in a grand procession. At the villages in the valley this is often accompanied by all kinds of festivities and with a lot of music and dancing. These celebrations mean the end of life in the Alps and the beginning of winter for the farmers in the valleys. Traditionally, much use is made of the alpine rose and stone pine for the decoration of the cattle, which are used to make artistic headdresses for them. The animals are therefore hung with large cow bells. In the villages it is often a feast for several days before winter sets in for the population.
