Vienna (Austria) - Remarks by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the event marking the 40th anniversary of the Vienna International Centre.
The Vienna International Centre, built in 1979, was the first of the four UN global headquarters to become carbon neutral. Austrian architect Johann Staber was ahead of his time in the 1970s when he designed the complex with its characteristic Y-shape and twenty-four thousand windows in order to save electricity by maximizing the use of natural light.
In 2008, a state-of-the art conference building was added with energy-saving features such as sensors that regulate air conditioning depending on the occupancy of rooms.
