The deadlift is a complicated exercise, but the REWARDS far outweigh the risks. Just because you might have tweaked your lower-back once, or know someone who got injured performing the exercise doesn't mean its "bad".
It's not a movement that as intuitive of say a Squat or Bench Press. It requires a bit more thought when it comes to proper form. But that doesn't mean it's hard. Just means you need to not be afraid to ask for help.
