Ayinai and the mother's groupThe Glorious Savings and Loans group in Turkana South Sub County started in 2016 and began as a table banking. The aim of starting the group was to loan mothers money, help them start their own businesses and support farming. It was formed through a training that was done on savings and loans.
Mothers benefit from trainings such as reproductive health and nutrition. The targeted group of mothers were pregnant and lactating mothers, it contains 20 members in total and after nine months the cycle is broken and they begin saving again.
Ayinai is a mother of 4 and joined the Glorious Savings and Loans group in 2016. Prior to joining the group she was struggling to get by and did not have access to enough food. The group enabled her to take a small loan to buy vegetables and start a farm. When she was pregnant, she often went hungry and this resulted in her baby Lokalale being born underweight. A visiting nutrition expert at the group also identified the child as underweight and referred the child for treatment. The family now have a successful farm and have enough food to feed the family. The money from the farm has also enabled her to build a small home.
