Most people who buy single call or put contracts end up losing because they’re often unaware of issues like theta decay or volatility, especially with calls. Even if a stock moves in your favor, theta decay and volatility can work against you, which becomes a bigger problem if you’re trading contracts with less than 30 days until expiration.

A smarter approach is to sell some put contracts against these positions to offset the theta decay. This approach requires a deeper understanding and is more complex than it may seem. Buying single calls or puts, even when recommended by trade alert services, can be challenging due to the underlying statistics of these contracts.
