Surprises 8: Recovery
First Weeks —Following delivery, you will experience pain and swelling in your genital area particularly if you received stitches.
It will be difficult to walk and sit, and it will be quite a process especially when using the bathroom.
You will need heavy pads for the incessant bleeding called lochia and the hospital will most likely provide ice packs and witch hazel to help reduce the pain and swelling.
Be prepared to bleed heavily for up to ten days while light bleeding and spotting can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks. and sometimes soreness can last as long as 3 months.
Plain old painkillers and warm baths will usually offer relief.
Your stomach muscles may be extremely weak.
And you may be surprised to see that the dark abdominal linea alba is very visible and your tummy is wrinkled and wobbly....don't fear it all goes back to normal.
Ask your physician when you can begin doing light abdominal exercises to strengthen your muscles.
If you had a caesarian section, you may not need the ice packs for your genital area, but you will need to care for your incision.
