✎ He was born in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa. He taught himself computer programming and at age 12, and sold the code for a video game he created to a magazine called PC for approximately $500. He was severely bullied throughout his childhood, and was once hospitalized when a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs. In 1995, Musk and his brother, Kimbal, started Zip2, a web software company, with $28,000 of their father's money. Following the financial crisis in 2008, Musk assumed leadership of Tesla Motors as CEO and product architect, positions he still holds today. In 2001, Musk travelled to Moscow to buy refurbished ICBMs (Dnepr) that could send the envisioned payloads into space. SpaceX is both the largest private producer of rocket motors in the world, and holder of the record for highest thrust-to-weight ratio for any known rocket motor. In June 2015, Musk announced a design competition for students and others to build Hyperloop pods for a 2015–2017 Hyperloop pod competition. In December 2016, Musk was ranked 21st on Forbes list of The World's Most Powerful People.
