He began a Ph.D. at Stanford University but dropped out after two days to pursue an entrepreneurial career. He founded X.com, an online payment company, which later became PayPal. He co-founded Tesla, Inc., an electric vehicle and solar panel manufacturer. He's also the founder of The Boring Company, an infrastructure, and tunnel-construction company. He founded SpaceX in 2002. He co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit research company that aims to promote friendly artificial intelligence. He has stated that the goals of SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity revolve around his vision to change the world and humanity. He wants to reduce the "risk of human extinction" by establishing a human colony on Mars.
