The word "patriotism" is closely associated with the USA outside of it itself - inside many still perceive it as a... lifestyle. Things couldn't be more different in Germany. Not only do we share in a general European sense of "there's a lot of other countries in the world, so maybe let's not overdo it", but we also are a bit timid around the topic. I took a look at how I phrased this difference in 2013 and found I had to reiterate and elaborate on some points.
