“I had entered college idealistic, thinking that I would like to join the government to make things better, but the war in Vietnam soured me to that idea,” Gordon Chang remembers. Working as a draft counselor during the summer of 1969 “just reconfirmed for me my feeling at the time, which was that government was not for me. Social protest was the way to make things better in society.”
