Howdy,
In this Magento Basics tutorial, we will be showing you "How to Add a Multi-Select Attribute".
If you want to add only one dropdown attribute there is a separate tutorial on that: "How to Add a Dropdown (Select) Attribute" - http://youtu.be/lhuHAMi8bxU
In the example, shown in the video we then named the Attribute Code with a prefix 'att_' this is your identifier that you created that attribute and not a default attribute in Magento.
The most important setting when adding a multi-select attribute is the "Catalog Input Type for Store Owner" and be always sure to choose "Multiple Select" and set "Apply To" to "All Product Types"
If you want the attribute/s to appear in the front-end of your Magento website, you need to set to Yes, "Visible on Product View Page on Front-end" and "Used in Product Listing" to Yes as well.
You can add options or the values of your attribute as many as you want and the entire process of adding a multi-select attribute is shown in 'plain English' in this video tutorial.
You can also use your attributes for layered navigation, we have a separate tutorial for that which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBxpE6YqtUI
It may happen that your attributes may not appear on your product, don't panic, do the following instead:
1. Make sure you picked up the right product
2. Flush out cache - a separate tutorial to do this can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyiVUjVBjVk
3. Reindex data - For a much deeper explanation about indexing and index management you can go here: https://understandinge.com/lesson/mwf-0031/
