Researchers in the Goldbogen lab at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station used video tags to film humpback whales and found a unique and rare foreflipper movement. Previously, it was believed humpback whales only used their front flippers for steering but this new "flapping" movement generates significant thrust.
