In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m making a few videos that are breast related during the month of October. This week, I thought I’d start with a personal story that I’ve never shared in detail before. About 15 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. I was 14 at the time and from that point on, my life was never the same. Breast cancer is a disease that not only affects the person who is diagnosed, but all the people around them as well. Growing up with a sick parent is incredibly painful, confusing, complex and isolating. For so many years it felt like I was alone in my story, but now I know that I’m not. Finding the path to healing is possible and as someone who has been on this path for half of my existence, I can tell you that true healing reveals the most vibrant colors this life has to offer.
A note about this video: This is intentionally focused on my story and I've only incorporated elements of my mom's experience when the details were necessary. I believe that our stories are ours to tell and we should honor that for others as well.
I’m in the process of slowly decorating and putting my place together. I’ll be sharing updates in real-time on Instagram, so make sure you’re following me if you’d like to see everything! http://www.instagram.com/ingridnilsen
WEEKLY UPDATE: The thing that’s top of mind for me right now: this video is incredibly scary for me to publish. My heart is racing as I type this, but my soul knows *this* is what I’m meant to be making right now. As a creative, that’s probably the most enriching and invigorating combination I could ask for. ❤️
