Infecting Brain Cancer Cells with Poliovirus to Treat Glioblastoma | Week 33 in Medical School

This past week in medical school I learned about what is in my opinion the coolest treatment for a disease I have learned about thus far: oncolytic polio/rhinovirus recombinant (PVSRIPO) for glioblastoma. This is something straight out of I Am Legend where a virus is used to treat cancer.

Glioblastoma currently has a poor prognosis with median survivals of just over a year. However, there is hope in a potential breakthrough therapy using a modified poliovirus that preferentially infects and kills the brain cancer cells as well as helping to stimulate the immune system to attack the brain cancer in glioblastoma. This was especially cool to learn about because it is research that started out at my own medical school: Duke University. So this gives me yet another reason to be thankful to be able to attend a medical school that is developing groundbreaking, life saving treatments.
